Beijing Olympic Games – Brief information

Olympic Games

  • Time – 8th August to 24th August
  • Cities of events
    – Beijing , Qingdao , Hong Kong
    – Tianjin , Shenyang, Shanghai, Qinhuangdao ( Only football match )
  • Open day of Olympic village – 27th July

Paralympics

  • Time – 6th September to 17th September
  • Cities of events – Beijing , Qingdao , Hong Kong
  • Open day of Paralympics village – 30th August

 

Special Governmental Control for Olympic

Rules pertains to Beijing city transportation restriction in Olympic Games & Paralympics was just published on 20th June:

  • Beijing city zoning control
  • Vehicle flow control
  • Aviation security and customs control

 

Beijing City Zoning Control

  • Traffic control measures will be applied to ALL Beijing city administrative zones during Olympic Games from 20th July to 27th August
  • The control area would be further narrow down running between city center to the "5th city ring" during the Paralympics from 28th August to 20th September

 

Vehicle Flow Control

  • From 20th July til 20th September, normal vehicles can only access control zones on alternate day in accordance to the last digit ( odd or even number ) of the vehicle license number.
  • The following vehicle types are exempted however:
    1. Vehicles with diplomatic nature
    2. Public bus and taxi
    3. China Post / EMS vehicles
    4. Approved vehicles with "green permit"
  • Vehicles in "yellow label" will not be allowed to operate in the control zones from 1st July to 20th September
  • Trucks and lorries are only allowed to enter into control zones between mid-night to 6am
  • Trucks with no Beijing registered license ( ie. those outside Beijing ) are not allowed to enter into Beijing from 1st July to 20th September

 

Aviation Security and Customs Control

  • Very strict control by Security Inspection Bureau:
    1. 100% on-line screening of inbound started from 23rd June
    2. 100% inspections on all outbound chemical shipments
    3. Open-box inspection on these categories: flags, propaganda banners, maps, audio/video matters, educational matters, printed matters, tourist souvenirs, toys, fake branded fashions/shoes/hats, electronic products, jewellery and watches
  • Customs hold and conduct detailed inspection on all consignments if there are discrepancies between physical freight and information on papers
  • With the opening of new passenger Terminal 3 at Beijing and more time to process inspections, cargo terminal lodgment time has been prolonged
  • From 20th June, most airlines stop accepting commodities in liquid natures
  • China EMS do not accept shipments in the forms of liquid, powdery and cream/lotion
  • Non-Dangerous chemical have to go through very strict inspection supported by certificates

 

Key actions to minimize impacts to customers

  • TNT fleet is licensed with "green permit"
  • TNT have added backup vehicles to cater for odd/even number control
  • TNT have re-adjusted the pick-up and delivery route plan
  • TNT work closely with our trading partner China EMS in supplementing the delivery capabilities
  • TNT have made special deals with major subcontractors to leverage their capacities
  • We have enhance network capabilities to link Beijing with other provinces ( eg Shijiazhuang, Tianjin, Qingdao, Dalian, Shenyang etc )
  • Additional airline space allotments with major airlines are concluded
  • TNT facilities at Shanghai Pudong, Hong Kong, Qingdao and Dalian are backup export platforms for Beijing
  • Additional manpower are recruited while staff are eager to postpone their annual leaves
  • X-ray machine is installed at TNT Beijing gateway to speed up on-site inspection process
  • TNT have weekly meeting with customs/security to constantly stay on top of the changing measures
