TNT China unversity commences through cooperation between Shanghai Jiaotong University and TNT
Shanghai – TNT, the leading provider of express, logistics and mail services, unveiled today TNT Chinese University together with Antai School of Management of Shanghai Jiaotong University. This marks the official establishment and kickoff of this alliance between these two entities aiming at exploiting their respective advantages to train up more local talents for the fast developing express, logistics and mail industries in China. Ken S. McCall, CEO of TNT China, Professor Ma Dexiu, General Secretary of Shanghai Jiaotong University CCP Committee, conducted the opening ceremony. Wang Fanghua, Dean of Antai School of Management of Shanghai Jiaotong University, attended the ceremony and delivered a speech.
A globally acknowledged Investor in People, TNT always regards its staff as the most important and valuable asset. TNT Chinese University is the first specialty university in China sponsored by a leading provider of logistics, express and mail services in the world. It is also the first university that Antai School of Management of Shanghai Jiaotong University establishes in cooperation with an enterprise, and the first specialty university that TNT Group sponsors throughout the world. The University will provide all-round training courses to employees from departments of logistics, express, and mail, to help them better service their customers with more and fresher knowledge and skills. At the same time TNT Chinese University will also provide training to partners and suppliers, acquainting them with advanced concepts in the world to breed better partnership. TNT will be responsible for the management of the University and Antai will provide the necessary facilities, equipments and part of the faculty. In addition, as part of the cooperation, TNT will also provide internship opportunities to students from Antai.
As sources for economic growth and new channels for market communications, modern logistics, express and mail industries will fuel and support further economic growth in China. More and more enterprises have come to realize that the optimization of supply chain can become their third "source of profit" and new point of growth in their core competency. The development of the industry has boosted the demand for qualified talents. It is estimated that there are currently about 15,000 logistics experts in China while the demand is as high as 600,000. Take Shanghai for example, the gap between demand and supply of logistics staff will exceed 1 million by Expo 2010. This huge gap will severely undermine the development of modern logistics industry in China.
The lack of professional talents and the current status of "people bottleneck" are the problems that have to be solved before logistics industry can achieve further development. "With China's accession to WTO, we see substantial growth opportunities in logistics, express, and mail services." Ken McCall, CEO of TNT China said, "The three core businesses of TNT will undergo material growth here and the recruitment and training of people is key to our long-term success in China. Therefore as an industry leader, we are determined to stand up to the fast growing demand in Chinese market by training up more local talents with our specialized knowledge and skills from our international operation, combined with Jiaotong University's expertise in training local staff."
As the other partner to TNT Chinese University, Wang Fanghua, Dean of Antai School of Management of Shanghai Jiaotong University, said: "The Operation and Logistics Management Research Center of Antai School will become an important and reliable resource of education facility for TNT China University. Antai's alliance with TNT, the leading provider of logistics, express and mail services, will train up more local experts to fill up the shortage of talents and to sustain the rapid development of the whole industry."
It is estimated that as a long-term cooperation project, by 2005 TNT Chinese University will be attended by 3,500 people. In addition, TNT's Investing in People series also includes TNT Young Talents Program, TNT Chinese University Students Internship Program and Cross Border Workforce Exchange Program.
