TNT and CYDF join hands to launch 'Warm the World' AIDS Orphans Relief Program in China

March 29, 2006, Beijing – Ken McCall, CEO of TNT China, the leading global provider of Express, Mail and Logistics services, and Wang Min, Vice President of China Youth Development Foundation (CYDF), today jointly announced the launch of the "Warm the World" AIDS Orphans Relief Program at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

"TNT delivers love to those children who need help, we deliver more than parcels and documents," Ken McCall said. "We have partnered with CYDF to raise public awareness about the AIDS orphan plight in China and to help establish an AIDS orphan relief system, ensuring that these children have a warm, hopeful and promising future." TNT will establish a 3 million RMB foundation to provide financial support toward improving the children's living conditions and ensuring they have access to uninterrupted primary and secondary educational opportunities. Over the coming five years, 600 orphans in De Hong County, Yunnan Province are expected to benefit from the foundation.

According to a survey conducted by China's Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization and UNAIDS in February 2006, China has an estimated 650,000 HIV and AIDS cases and that number has increased over the year. The rampant spread of HIV/AIDS has produced a special underprivileged group – AIDS orphans – those children whose parents have died of HIV/AIDS.

Today, there are 76,000 AIDS orphans in China and a report by UNICEF indicates that the total number of China's AIDS orphans will soar to 150,000 to 250,000 by 2010. Most AIDS orphans face huge pressure from an early age following the deaths of their parents and the enormous medical expenses incurred, and they also have no guarantees about their education. Moreover, they experience unfair treatment due to the social prejudice towards AIDS.

Wang Min said that over the years CYDF has been committed to helping youth enhance their learning and life skills, and improving the environment for the development of youth by providing aid services and supporting social advocacy. The establishment of Project Hope and Mother River Protection Project has received extensive public attention. In recent years, CYDF has carried out a series of programs and activities, such as free AIDS prevention booklet distribution, AIDS Orphans Relief Program and Red Ribbon Island Project, which have received wide spread support from society. "Warm the World" is the first AIDS Orphan Relief Program in China to be jointly launched by a Fortune 500 multinational company and a Chinese NGO. It aims to provide those orphans with better educational and living conditions to ensure their healthy development.

As a global leader in corporate social responsibility, TNT has a longstanding tradition of supporting children's charities. TNT launched an annual corporate social responsibility campaign in 2003 called 'Walk the World' in support of its partnership with the United Nations World Food Program. The event raised funds for underprivileged children in China's Gansu Province. Through "Warm the World," TNT will be able to increase public attention and awareness of AIDS orphans. TNT hopes this program will be seen as a part of its long-term commitment to being a responsible corporate citizen in China and that it will also instil pride among TNT's employees and strengthen their sense of social responsibility.
